Blair Broughton

Teacher at Sultan Middle School.

Blair Broughton, Sultan High School Class of 2001, has dedicated his career to educating and inspiring young minds. After graduating from high school, Blair attended Washington State University, where he initially studied communications with a desire to work in radio. However, after working at the WSU Children's Center providing day care services to the campus, Blair discovered his calling for working with children and changed majors to Education.

Blair has been teaching for 16 years, returning to hometown Sultan Middle School. He is currently teaching Washington state history and AVID to grades 6-8. Is he at the right grade level? He jokes, “I never got past seventh grade in personality, so I kind of just blended in.”

During his time at Sultan High School, Blair was an all-conference football player, a member of the school's band and drama club, and even a member of homecoming royalty. Blair thoroughly enjoyed his Sultan High experience but encourages current students to think about getting away from Sultan after graduation and exploring other parts of the world. Going away to Washington State was a right-sized step since Pullman’s a small town.

Blair is now married to his high school sweetheart, and they have three children. Their youngest currently is a student of his!

A popular activity at Sultan Middle School is the trip to New York, Philadelphia and DC by eighth graders. Blair never tires of watching the kids experience their country’s roots first hand. This year’s trip of 50+ students is Blair’s seventh. Typical miles walked by a student during the seven days? Over 35.

Besides being a historian, Blair is also passionate about helping students prepare for their futures. One wall of his classroom is covered by college pennants, reminding them of some of the college possibilities. Blair's future goals include continuing to grow as a teacher and always striving to be the best he can be, never settling for doing things the same way forever.
